Hildegard’s 4 Teas to Reduce Cramps

Hildegard relied on herbs and spices to preserve good health and resolve discomfort.  Here is a list of 4 teas from Hildegard of Bingen medicine to improve menstrual discomfort and reduce cramps.

(1) Menstrual Tea Blend to Reduce Cramps and Abdominal Pain

This menstrual tea blend works to reduce cramps, abdominal pain, and sensitive breasts. Since these symptoms are often accompanied by a depressed mood, St. Johns Wort is included. Combine the following herbs in equal proportions (1:1 ratio).

Take 2 teaspoons of menstrual tea mixture with boiling water and allow 10 minutes to steep. Drink 1-2 cups daily (don’t hesitate to add something sweet, like agave or honey). If taken regularly, expect results over 8 weeks.

(2) Menstrual Tea Blend For Pain, Anxiety, and Sleep Deficiency

This menstrual tea is recommended for pain, nervousness, and sleep difficulties before and during menstruation. The mixture is prepared from the following herbs, and relative proportions.

  • 1 cup Yarrow herb
  • ½ cup of lemon balm leaves
  • ½ a cup of Valerian root.

Take 2 teaspoons of the mixture with 1 cup of boiling water allow 10 minutes to steep. Drink 1-2 cups daily (add honey or agave to sweeten). If taken regularly, expect results over 8 weeks.

(3) Menstrual Tea Blend to Reduce Water Retention

This menstrual tea has a flushing effect to reduce water retention caused by periods. The addition of fennel adds a pleasant aromatic taste to the blend. Combine the following herbs in these relative proportions.

  • 2 Tablespoons of Silverweed
  • 1/3 cup of Chamomile flowers
  • 1/3 cup of nettle herb
  • 2 Tablespoons Birch leaves
  • ¼ cup fennel fruit.

Use a mortar and pestle to crush two heaping teaspoons, add 1 cup of boiling water, and allow 10 minutes to steep. Drink 4-5 cups of freshly brewed tea, taken throughout the day.

(4) Menstrual Tea Blend to Reduce Cramps

For relief from menstrual discomfort and to reduce cramps combine the following herbs in equal proportions.

  • ¼ cup Chamomile flowers
  • ¼ cup Yarrow flowers
  • ¼ cup Lemon Balm leaves
  • ¼ cup Silverweed
  • ¼ cup Fennel fruit

Crush 1 heaping teaspoon of the mixture in a mortar and pestle, 1 cup of boiling water, and steep for 15 minutes. Drink up to 5 cups daily.
